At the beginning of the film, Nawal takes her son Hani to Luna Park, which is an actual western styled amusement park that first opened in 1911 in Cairo, Egypt and lasted until 1915. Once WWI broke out, Luna Park was turned into an auxiliary hospital and remained so until 1916 when the hospital was officially closed down.

Later in the film, Khaled reads a newspaper with headlines “ Egyptian troops reach Palestine; Egypt sent forces to help with Palestine-Israel war in 1948”. 1948 was the year that the Arab-Israeli War began.

The movie took place before the 1952 Revolution in Egypt so the Egyptian culture was still very immersed in the western cultures and there was still a constitutional monarchy.
